Bringing the Ramayana to Poland  – Indradyumna Swami Nectar

His Holiness Indradyumna Swami and the Polish festival team have been preparing for the upcoming Woodstock Festival. In the meantime, the Devotees have been continuing with their daily festival programs and have bee noting how much the people are affected by the performing arts centered on the pastimes of the Supreme. The Polish people have been so touched by the performances of the devotees this year, and Indradyumna Swami wrote in a Facebook post:

Yesterday during our performance of the Ramayana at our festival in Poland a number of people could be seen crying. Observing this my heart became completely satisfied. I saw their tears as the perfection of all our efforts to bring people into contact with Krsna consciousness through the performing arts. I remembered a similar experience Srila Prabhupada had when he played the part of Advaita Acarya in a theatrical production when he was in college:

“For more than a year, Abhay and the others rehearsed the Caitanya play, until finally their director allowed them to stage a public performance. Abhay, playing the part of Advaita Acarya, noticed that many people in the audience were crying. At first he could not understand why, but then he realized that because the players had been well trained and because they were sincere, the audience was moved.”

[ Srila Prabhupada Lilamrita, Volume One ]

Srila Prabhupada, we are eager to take our festival everywhere throughout the 14 worlds for your pleasure!

Srila Prabhupada’s books in Poland – Indradyumna Swami Nectar

The Polish Festival of India with His Holiness Indradyumna Swami has been going better than ever this year! Indradyumna Swami keeps disciples and the larger devotee community up to date through his Facebook posts which tell the news of more Polish people attending the festivals than ever before (rain or shine), especially of sankirtan and book distribution, which is always one of the main themes of the tour.

In fact, just a few days ago, Indradyumna Swami wrote in a Facebook post:

Srila Prabhupada’s request that his books be distributed is one of the main themes of our summer festival tour here in Poland. Each day on harinam as we advertise our event several book distributors follow behind us selling Srila Prabhupada’s literatures. During my 45 minute talk from the stage at the festival I encourage people to purchase Bhagavad Gita and offer to sign the books with a dedication afterwards. As soon as I get down from the stage there is always a line of people waiting with books. I can’t think of anything that satisfies me more than giving that talk each day and signing books afterwards, for I know that by doing so my spiritual master, Srila Prabhupada, is pleased.

As the tour goes on, there are more and more heartwarming stories of how the Tour is impacting the local Polish people. In a touching Facebook post, Indradyumna Swami writes about this family:

Indradyumna_Swami_Polish_Tour

He writes:

This is a family that has been visiting our festival in Poland every summer for 12 years. They plan their vacation around our event. After our program this evening they decided to go deeper into Krsna consciousness and bought 10 books; one copy each of Srila Prabhupada’s large size Bhagavad Gita and one copy each of a smaller version of the Gita. They also purchased 4 other books on the science of self realization. “We have plenty of time to read them now on our vacation,” the gentleman said as they left. Srila Prabhupada must be so pleased!

All glories to the Devotees spreading Mahaprabhu’s mercy in Poland! All glories to Srila Gurudeva! All glories to Ananta Vrindavan das and his seva rendered at the lotus feet of Srila Gurudeva!

Festival of India: Spreading Hare Krishna along the Baltic Coast

In 1996, according to a Polish poll, the three most popular people in the country were Pope John Paul II, Mr. Jurek Owsiak, and then-Polish-president Mr. Kwasniewski.

Who is this Jurek Owsiak? At the time, Owsiak was the director and founder of Poland’s biggest charity, the Great Orchestra of Christmas Help. Every year during the Christmas period, the charity would put on television benefit programs, during which the public phone in pledges to buy medical equipment for children’s hospitals. In 1995, the Orchestra raised one million dollars, no small amount for an Eastern European country.

In the mid-1990s, Owsiak had also arranged a folk-rock festival in the summer, called Woodstock. The festival, which is based on the concepts of the original Woodstock in America, is attended by tens of thousands of young people. His original reasoning behind organizing the festival was “so that all of the people who took part in the winter fundraising can come together for a summer meeting of love, peace, and music.”

But what is love? And how can peace be attained? And what kind of music will facilitate that?

When he met the ISKCON Sannyasa-Guru, His Holiness Indradyumna Swami Maharaja, and the 230 devotees of the Laksmi Nrsimha Traveling Festival, Owsiak decided to invite the Hare Krishna Devotees to his pre-planned Woodstock Festival. He knew that Indradyumna Swami would be facilitating 15 festivals along the Baltic Coast of Poland that very Summer and he knew how much these festivals had positively affected the youth, the children, the Polish men and women. He wanted the Devotees to bring their uplifting personalities, their colors and their vibrancy–but also the very serious message of the Gaudiya Vaishnava tradition that they represented–the same message that A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada had introduced to the West in 1965.

Indradyumna_Swami_Children

In his lectures during the festival programs, Indradyumna Swami delivers the philosophy contained within the Bhagavad Gita, basing his lectures on Srila Prabhupada’s own classes, and he strategically attracts all to this ancient spiritual philosophy through the musical performances and theatrical presentations based on Vedic texts, graphic exhibits, stalls with books and handicrafts, and prasadam (sanctified vegetarian food) that the festivals include. Walking down the beaches of the Baltic Coast, Indradyumna Swami leads the harinam sankirtan party of Devotees, as they chant the Hare Krsna Maha Mantra, giving the Holy Name of Lord Krishna to the young men, women, and children who were otherwise having an ordinary Summer day. Indradyumna Swami writes updates on the progress of the festival on his Facebook page.

Indradyumna_Swami_Tour Indradyumna_Swami_Viva_Kultura

The Vedic literatures and saintly teachers following them attest that the Lord is present in the sound of His Holy Name. When Indradyumna Swami delivers his lectures at the Polish festival programs and at the Woodstock festival, he discusses how actual peace can be obtained when we recognize that we are all God’s children; how love for the Supreme, Krishna, will enable us to rise above the duality and suffering we encounter in this world, and how chanting the Hare Krishna Maha Mantra can give us happiness—now—since it connects us to our spiritual source. “Associate with God, and you will also become happy,” Indradyumna Swami reiterates in his festival lectures.

As the festivals progress throughout the Summer, enlivening especially the youth and children of Poland, Ananta Vrindavan das, one of Indradyumna Swami’s disciples, is behind his camera, practicing his art of capturing stunning photographs of all the countless, blissful people participating in the kirtans and other festival activities. Ananta Vrindavan das, though humble, has refined his photography skills over the years, and especially concentrates on photographing devotee and other ISKCON events. Following his beloved Guru throughout the year, Ananta Vrindavan das takes photographs and creates beautiful Facebook albums, posted to Indradyumna Swami’s personal Facebook page, so that the Devotees can savor the memories for a lifetime.

Indradyumna_Swami_Signing_Gitas_2 Indradyumna_Swami_Women

And the most joyous memories of the Baltic Coast festivals, for Indradyumna Swami, are the Polish people themselves and their personal accounts of how receiving a Bhagavad Gita, or hearing the Hare Krishna mantra sung on the beachfront, or trying delicious vegetarian prasadam, or joining the harinam and chanting and dancing next to Indradyumna Swami and the Devotees—had brought a joy to their lives not otherwise encountered. It was the missing puzzle piece in their lives.

In fact, every year, Indradyumna Swami meets someone who tells him that their journey in Krishna Consciousness, in Bhakti Yoga, began as a child, a young Polish girl or boy, who attended a festival program that changed the course of their lives. Indradyumna Swami meets with such people, the men and the women of Poland, hears and records their stories in his well-known “Diary of a Traveling Monk” and finds ways to then involve them in devotional service, so that their inner bliss, the very nascent beginning of their spiritual lives, doesn’t simply end when the festival ends.

This year, he met Kasia, a woman who told him that she’d first come to the festival with her parents when she was 11 years old. She returned this year, some 20 years later, with her own daughter. “I wanted her to have the same wonderful experience I had at your festival when I was young,” she said. “And most important I wanted to buy the book I remember you spoke on during my first visit years ago.” The book is Srila Prabhupada’s Bhagavad Gita As It Is. Indradyumna Swami wrote of this experience on his Facebook page.

Children_Festival_Indradyumna Kasia_Indradyumna_Swami

The women are given the opportunity to meet with the female disciples of Indradyumna Swami, and they are given saris, chant and dance with the devotees during the festival programs, and learn the basic tenets of the Gaudiya Vaishnava philosophy by interacting with the Devotees and by attending question and answer sessions held during the festival programs. Similarly, the men meet with the male disciples of Indradyumna Swami, chant and dance during the festival kirtans, and also learn the philosophy of Bhakti Yoga as presented in the Bhagavad Gita. Look at the photos contained within the Summer albums on Indradyumna Swami’s Facebook page and you’ll see it: the smiles and happiness adorning the faces of those who are uplifted by the Hare Krishna Maha Mantra and the philosophy of Bhakti Yoga.

When Owsiak invited Indradyumna Swami to that very first Woodstock Festival so many years ago, he didn’t know that he would be facilitating millions of people, over the course of the next 22 years, to participate in the blissful chanting of Lord Krishna’s Holy Names; he didn’t know that he would be giving the boys and girls of Poland a chance to find lasting happiness by learning about Vedic culture and the message of the Bhagavad Gita; he didn’t know that he was inviting men and women of all ages and creeds to “Krishna’s Village of Peace,” a place where they could experience a “different, better world” of equality that rises above the bodily platform—and not just for three days—but for as long as they wished; and finally, he didn’t know that he had connected them to the transcendental message that A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada brought to the West over 50 years ago now—through the dedicated service of a dedicated disciple, His Holiness Indradyumna Swami.

After the first Woodstock Festival, Owsiak wrote a stunningly heartfelt letter to Indradyumna Swami and the Polish Tour Devotees, which summed up the entire objective and purpose of the Baltic Coast festivals:

Dear Friends,

We will remember your being with us at the Woodstock Stop ‘96 forever. The peaceful Krsna village contributed extraordinary color and became one with the main stage, from which you gave your message of love, friendship, and peace to the young. Your efficient activities were praised by everyone who came to the festival. Your food and your meetings with the people will stay in our memory for a long time, together with the message of your philosophy, words, rites, and manners. All this gave us a three-day experience of a different, better world, and your music came to the hearts of everyone.

On behalf of my foundation, I’d especially like to thank Indradyumna Swami for being with us with his spirit, body, and work. Thank you for the delicious meals, smiles, and for everything.

Jurek Owsiak,

The Great Orchestra of Christmas Help

With Srila Prabhupada’s mercy and guidance, may His Holiness Indradyumna Swami Maharaja and the Devotees continue to enliven and uplift the Polish people through their lively and vibrant presentation of Vedic culture for 28+ more years.

Polish Tour in Full Swing! – Indradyumna Swami Nectar

For the past two weeks, His Holiness Indradyumna Swami has been engaged in preaching on the annual Polish tour. He is keeping disciples and devotees up to date through his Facebook posts.

On July 4th, Indradyumna Swami wrote in a Facebook post:

Our 29th annual Festival of India is in full swing here on the beaches of the warm Baltic Sea coast in Poland. 250 devotees from numerous countries around the world have assembled for 2 months of harinam and festivals introducing people to our Krsna conscious movement. If the weeks and months ahead are anything like the first few days of our programs, we’re in for some real nectar.

Ananta Vrindavan das has been taking photographs of some of the tour Devotees’ in a portrait-like fashion and those photos can also now be found on Facebook.

Already, there are very heartwarming stories of how the Tour is impacting the local Polish people. In a touching Facebook post, Indradyumna Swami writes about Kasia, who first came to the Polish festival with her parents when she was 11 years old.

He writes:

As a child she was fascinated by everything. She even won a sari in the dance competition. She still has it. She returned this evening, 20 years later, with her own daughter. “I wanted her to have the same wonderful experience I had at your festival when I was young,” she said. “And most important I wanted to buy the book I remember you spoke on during my first visit years ago.” She is standing here next to me with that book: Srila Prabhupada’s Bhagavad Gita As It Is. Just one of the many miracles these festivals are producing. All glories to Sri Krsna Samkirtan!

Looking ahead to the tour, Indradyumna Swami wrote on his Facebook page:

The Festival of India – the Polish Tour – begins in a few days. It will be our 28th year of performing along the Baltic Sea coast. Three hundred devotees are arriving at the base. I can’t wait for the nectar that comes from sharing our good fortune with others!

After the Sadhu Sanga Kirtan retreat, His Holiness Indradyumna Swami headed to ISKCON Silicon Valley, where he participated in several home programs and visited with his Godbrother, Vaisesika dasa and the devotees of the booming Silicon Valley community.

Indradyumna Swami wrote on his Facebook page to commemorate the event yesterday:

One of my samkirtan heroes, Vaisesika Dasa, distributing Srila Prabhupada’s books at the St. Louis Airport in 1986 … 32 years ago. He’s still distributing those books, as well as inspiring others to do so. Under his direction, every Saturday over 100 devotees in ISKCON Silicon Valley go out to sell these most valuable literatures. Vaisesika Dasa is exemplary in every regard. God bless him!

Indradyumna Swami very much looks up to his Godbrother and even spoke about him at length at one of the home programs held in Silicon Valley. He wrote in an earlier Facebook post:

Dear disciples: Recently I had the good fortune to visit ISKCON Silicon Valley, here in the USA, where I had the association of my dear godbrother, Vaisesika prabhu. Please listen to the glories of this wonderful devotee as I praise him and his good wife, Nirakula dasi, at a home program one evening. Sadhu Sanga Retreat: The Best Ever – Indradyumna Swami Nectar

Two weeks ago, over 2,000 devotees of Krishna gathered at the Art of Living Retreat Center in Boone, North Carolina,  for the Sadhu Sanga Kirtan retreat that His Holiness Indradyumna Swami organized with the help of his disciples. The kirtan event was attended by many disciples of A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada and kirtan leaders included Govinda SwamiBadahari dasMadhava NaidooNiranjana SwamiVaisesika dasJahnavi HarrisonAgnideva das (a surprise!), Indradyumna Swami, Radhanath Swami, and others.

Indradyumna Swami wrote on his Facebook page to commemorate the event yesterday:

This year’s Sadhu Sanga Retreat in Boone, North Carolina, USA was the best ever. Over 2,000 devotees from all over the world attended and there were 150,000 views of the livestream videos. Prasadam was served 3 times a day which amounted to 20,000 plates served over the entire event. There were 14 kirtaneers – some of the best in ISKCON – who melted the hearts of everyone who attended. Everything was 1st class: the organization, the facilities, the prasadam, the decorations, the sound system and the transcendental atmosphere.

Ananta Vrindavan das, one of Indradyumna Swami’s disciples, released a long-awaited video covering the event and it can be found on his facebook page or on Indradyumna Swami’s Facebook page. Ananta Vrindavan das worked tirelessly over the course of the last two weeks, and especially in the last 24 hours, to put this video together. Now everyone can relive the experiences or have a taste for what this retreat is like by watching the video footage.

Ukraine: Preacher’s Paradise – Indradyumna Swami Nectar

Before the annual Sadhu Sanga Kirtan retreat, His Holiness Indradyumna Swami wound up his most recent preaching tour with a trip to Ukraine. Tha marked the end of 6 weeks in Russia and eventually Ukraine. From Ukraine, he spent a day in Warsaw resting before flying out to Chicago and eventually to Boone, North Carolina, where the Sadhu Sanga Retreat took place over Memorial Day weekend.

Indradyumna

Ananta Vrindavan das, one of Indradyumna Swami’s disciples, captured the trip in video and in photos, as usual, and his album can be found here on his facebook page.

In a Facebook post, Indradyumna Swami gave very encouraging words about the trip:

As the spring tour winds down we find ourselves in the wonderful association of the devotees in Dnipro. This is an ideal place to wrap up the last 6 weeks of travel in Russia and Ukraine as the devotees here have an insatiable taste for the Holy Name and dancing in kirtan. Whether it be in a public setting such as the Rathayatra in Dnipro, a festival celebrating the association of devotees, or in powerful temple programs, devotees love kirtan. As a team we feel quite humbled to have been blessed to serve Srila Prabhupada sharing his message of Krsna consciousness with these devotees.

As usual, Indradyumna Swami chanted and danced with the devotees in Dnipro, Ukraine and was pleased to see their spiritual enthusiasm and devotion.

All glories to the devotees of Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu who spread the Holy Names far and wide! All glories to A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada! All glories to all the followers of Sri Rupa and Sri Sanatana Goswamis!

Over Memorial Day weekend, over 2,000 devotees gathered at the Art of Living Retreat Center in Boone, North Carolina,  for the Sadhu Sanga Kirtan retreat that His Holiness Indradyumna Swami organized with the help of his disciples.

At the retreat, there was a disciples’ meeting on Saturday, which has become an annual event for the disciples of Indradyumna Swami. At that time, the vyasa puja ceremony for Indradyumna Swami was carried out and the Swami also read his most recent diary entry, entitled: “He did his time” and available on his facebook page and on his Traveling Monk website. The diary entry discusses a little bit about Indradyumna Swami’s time in the Marines. He is pictured in his uniform below.

The Sadhu Sanga kirtan event was attended by many disciples of A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada and kirtan leaders included Govinda SwamiBadahari dasMadhava NaidooNiranjana SwamiVaisesika dasJahnavi HarrisonAgnideva das (a surprise!), Indradyumna Swami, Radhanath Swami, and others.

Soon, the retreat organizers will send out recordings of the blissful kirtans that had everyone up and dancing. A highlight of the event took place when Vaisesika das invited all of the disciples of Srila Prabhupada in attendance to go to the stage to chant and dance up there with him.

Ananta Vrindavan das, one of Indradyumna Swami’s disciples captured the event in video and photography, as usual, and his album can be found here on his facebook page.

In his diary post, Indradyumna Swami quoted Srila Prabhupada at the end.

“A Vaisnava is always a well-wisher to everyone. The Six Gosvamis, for example, are described in this way: dhiradhira janapriyau. They were popular with both the gentle and the ruffians. A Vaisnava must be equal to everyone, regardless of one’s position. Atmavat: a Vaisava should be like Paramatma. Isvara sarva-bhutanam hrd-dese ‘rjuna tisthati. Paramatma does not hate anyone … As the moon never refuses to distribute its pleasing rays even to the home of a candala, a Vaisnava never refuses to act for everyone’s welfare.”
